WLWed: Quitting Is Not an Option

Welcome to Weight Loss Wednesday!

This week we're talking about treats.  Yes, carrots and brocolli are good.  But we will be start to feel deprived if that is all we eat.  So what is working for you?  What low fat and/or low cal treats have you found since you started losing weight?  Being a girl who loves treats, I can't wait to find out your favorites…and maybe they'll become my favorites ;)

I'm going to break my own rule this week.  I'm not going to talk about this week's topic.  Instead I am going to ramble.  I hope you'll forgive me.

At tonight's Weight Watcher's meeting I felt like a failure.

I gained .8 lb.

As I sat in the meeting, my mind went over the week.  I knew I had probably snacked too much and indulged too much at a weekend birthday party.  Last week's stormy weather kept our walks shorter than usual.

I knew any loss would be little.  But a gain just really upset me.  I knew I had no one else to blame but myself.

Every meeting ends with a little mantra…

Quitting is not an option!

Tonight though I didn't feel it.  Tears threatening to fall, I almost choked on the words.  They were hard to say.  They were even harder to feel.  But I said it anway.

And even though I am tired…even though I feel like my knees are skinned…even though I feel like giving up…

Quitting is not an option!

And I am reminded of the scripture…

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.  Galatans 6:9

It's easy to become weary.  It's easy to concede to feelings.  It's easy to give up.

But we weren't called to do the easy things.  We weren't called to live a life of comfort.

We are called to offer our bodies as living sacrifices to the most high God.  As such, we need to remember that our bodies are His living temples.  And they need to be treated with respect…no matter how hard it is.

So I'm going to dust off my knees and put aside my feelings.  I'm going to keep walking this weight loss journey.  And I'm going to keep repeating the mantra until I do feel it.

Won't you join me my friend?

Quitting is not an option!

The Importance of Family Vacations

I had a revelation last Thanksgiving.  Actually it was the day after Thanksgiving.  Our family drove down to Florida to spend the holiday with some of my husband’s extended family.  While we were there, we decided to spend two days at Kennedy Space Center.

If you have never visited the space center, I highly recommend it…especially if anyone in your family loves space and/or the space program.  It’s an amazing experience to the space race comes alive and how astronauts really live.

Anyway…back to my revelation…

We were standing in line waiting for a tour bus when I noticed my son’s t-shirt.  It was bright red and sported the name “Mexico” in big black and white letters.  Remembering the family cruise we took in September when we bought the t-shirt, I couldn’t help but smiling.

It was one of those moments I’ll never forget.  Here we were at the Kennedy Space Center and my son was wearing a t-shirt that represented a great family vacation.

It was also the moment I had my revelation…

This was important to us…travelling together as a family.

It isn’t always easy to take family vacations.  They can be expensive.  They take time.  They take effort to plan and pack and prepare…not to mention the time away from home and work.

But family vacations are important.

They get us back to who we are…without distractions…without stress…without worry.  They remind us of what we love about our spouse.  They help us to see our children in a new light.  And they allow us the opportunity to make common memories…memories that serve as family bonds through the years.

Family vacations are some of my best childhood memories.

Every summer when I would visit my dad and step-mother, they would always have a great vacation planned for us.  I have fond memories of seeing the wide open spaces of Carlsbad Cavern in New Mexico, waiting in line over an hour with my step-sister to ride our favorite coaster, and tubing down the river as a family after being forced to face my silly fears.

Now I have new memories…watching my son’s face light up at the sight of Thomas the Tank Engine, laughing at him holding a whole conversation with a little capuchin monkey, and seeing him wide-eyed in the ball field of the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza.

As my son enters high school this year, I have come to peace with the fact that I really only have four more years with him…at the most.  Knowing those four years will pass in the blink of an eye, my priorities have changed (more about that in another post).

Our house may never have granite countertops or a beautiful back patio, but it no longer matters to me.  Instead I would rather spend that money making memories and building family bonds.  I know those are bonds that will last far beyond the next four years.

What about your family?  Do you like to take vacations together?  What are some of your favorite memories?
